[Apparel] The Lineage Of. . . Starter Clothing

"Look For The Star!" - Starter

in lineage, i’ll be attempting to give some form of insight into a brands history; particularly the brands i wear/have worn and/or that i have respect for.

to start us off, i’ll be shedding some light on the Starter (non-committal pun) clothing company. Starter were formed, in the early 1970s by David Beckerman. they make a whole load of items but are probably most famous for their Starter BaseBall jackets and their Starter caps.

Starter were huge throughout the 1980s, being signed up to to make official sporting apparel for for all the major US sports, NBA, NFL, NHL & even Universities!? then into the early 90s they were HUGE, now Jazzy Jeff isn’t quite the Fresh Prince but in 1994, this was a big ad, or so i’m told –

round the early 1990s my aunt was flying back & forth between here & Florida, & each time she’d come back she’d bring all kinds of randomness, shell suits, LA Gear Lights & Starter caps. now i’ll admit when i was young a cap was just a cap and my true fascination with Starter came about when i was about 17 but i’ll always remember the Orlando Magic cap i had (& most likely lost somewhere), now i’ve been through different phases, crochet hats, bobble beanies etc. but i’ve always come back to the cap. btw, when i say cap i’m referring to the “SnapBack” the cap with adjustable snaps-at-the-back, not a New Era “fitted” cap.

throughout the 90s Starter’s popularity maintained, they were still a core supplier for major sporting teams until in the latter 90s the NFL had a lockout which had a sever effect on the Starter business. the Starter company was later bought by Nike, in some Tesco-eque takeover, Nike did little with the brand though the timeless Starter caps and Starter Baseball jackets remained somewhat popular.

Nike then sold the Starter brand to Iconix Brand Group, who have since gotten into a partnership with Walmart to retail newer Starter products; Starter no longer hold contracts with sports franchises, having instead decided to sponsor sportmen on a contract-to-contract basis, with NFL player Tony Romo their biggest client.

in recent years with the uptake on everything vintage there has been a resurgence in the good ol’ Starter cap. you can pick them up most anywhere these days but they will forever be a staple of my wardrobe & not some passing craze.

& remember, “i was sporting caps while N!££@$ was wearing stocking caps
